Adult Practical Skills — English & Everyday Mathematics

Practical Learning for Greater Confidence and Independence

St. Joseph's Online Institute offers a practical online programme for adults who want to become more confident in using English and everyday mathematics.

Many capable adults use English and mathematics in their daily lives without feeling confident about them. English appears in business documents, invoices, emails, educational certificates, technical information, computers, and many other areas of modern life. Everyday mathematics is equally important when buying and selling, calculating discounts, understanding prices, managing payments, or making financial decisions.

This programme is designed to help adult learners overcome hesitation, strengthen their foundations, and use these essential skills with greater confidence in real-life situations.

Who Is This Programme For?

This programme is suitable for adults who want to strengthen their practical English and everyday mathematics, including:

  • Working adults

  • Small business owners and shopkeepers

  • Employees

  • Entrepreneurs

  • Adults returning to education

  • Anyone who feels hesitant or lacks confidence when using English or everyday mathematics

No advanced academic background is required. The programme begins with practical foundations and progresses gradually.

Practical English

The aim is not simply to memorise English words or grammar rules. We want learners to become comfortable using English in situations they are likely to encounter in everyday adult life.

With regular learning and practice, learners will work towards being able to:

  • Read and understand common documents, stories, notices, and articles written in English

  • Write simple letters and emails

  • Write short pieces of their own in English

  • Describe an event or experience they have seen or experienced

  • Understand slow, clear spoken English in familiar situations

  • Respond using commonly used English words and expressions

  • Communicate with greater confidence without being afraid of making mistakes

The emphasis is on practical communication, understanding, and confidence.

Everyday Mathematics

Mathematics is not only a school subject. Adults encounter mathematical decisions throughout everyday life.

Learners will practise how to:

  • Use a calculator correctly

  • Identify which mathematical operation is appropriate for a practical situation

  • Calculate totals and prices

  • Work with buying and selling

  • Calculate discounts

  • Understand percentages

  • Work with profit and loss

  • Calculate or understand simple EMI-related figures

  • Use everyday calculations to make sensible decisions

The emphasis is not on complicated mathematics. It is on understanding which calculation is needed, why it is needed, and how to carry it out correctly.

How We Teach

Our teaching approach follows the same principles that guide all our educational programmes.

Understanding Comes First

We begin with foundations and make sure learners understand an idea before expecting them to use it independently.

Practical Situations

Lessons are connected with familiar situations from everyday life, work, communication, shopping, business, and personal decision-making.

Practice Builds Confidence

Learners need opportunities to practise speaking, writing, reading, listening, and calculating. Mistakes are treated as a natural part of learning rather than something to be embarrassed about.

Learning at a Steady Pace

The programme is designed for adults who may have been away from formal education for many years. We therefore build skills gradually rather than expecting learners to learn everything at once.

Confidence and Independence

Our ultimate aim is not to make learners dependent on a teacher. It is to help them gradually become more confident in handling common situations for themselves.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this programme does not mean becoming an expert in English or mathematics.

It means reaching a point where an adult learner can look at an English document and understand its common meaning, write a simple message or email, describe something that happened, listen to clear spoken English and respond appropriately.

It also means being able to face a practical numerical problem and ask:

What calculation do I need to do here?

Then use a calculator or simple mathematical method to arrive at a sensible answer.

In other words, success means greater confidence, understanding, and independence in everyday life.

A Simple Way to Begin

We want adults to have an opportunity to experience the programme before making a longer commitment.

First Month — ₹500

Start with one month of online learning for ₹500.

After experiencing the programme, learners can decide whether they wish to continue.

Continue for Four Months — ₹2,000 in Total

If a learner wishes to continue, the total fee for the four-month programme is ₹2,000.

Since ₹500 has already been paid for the first month, the learner pays only ₹1,500 more for the remaining three months.

₹500 + ₹1,500 = ₹2,000 for four months

There is no need to make the four-month commitment at the beginning.

Online Classes

Classes are conducted entirely online, making the programme accessible to adults from different places.

Class timings:

  • 8:30 pm – 10:00 pm

  • 3 days per week

The evening schedule is designed to make participation possible for adults who have work or other daytime responsibilities.
