When a Child Struggles, Look Beneath the Difficulty
Parents sometimes see a low grade and naturally wonder:
"Is my child simply not good at this subject?"
A low grade, however, does not always tell us why a child is struggling.
Sometimes the difficulty lies in the current topic. Sometimes the learner needs more practice. Sometimes the learner needs a different explanation.
And sometimes something much earlier is getting in the way.
A child may appear unable to concentrate on a Year 7 or Year 8 mathematics lesson because the child is still struggling with ideas that should have become familiar much earlier.
When this happens, giving more and more work on the current topic may not solve the problem.
The learner may need to go backwards before being able to move forwards.
One example from my teaching experience illustrates this well.
When I began teaching two brothers, their father explained that the older child was performing reasonably well in mathematics, while the younger child was struggling considerably.
The younger student was in Year 7 and was finding mathematics particularly difficult.
After a few sessions, I noticed something important. His difficulty was not simply with the Year 7 mathematics being taught. He was struggling to concentrate because some of the basic number concepts underneath the current work were not secure.
That changed the way I approached the teaching.
Instead of immediately giving him a large amount of arithmetic to memorise, I first wanted him to understand what numbers and basic operations actually meant.
We talked about why people needed numbers, why counting was important in everyday life, what addition means, and why subtraction is useful.
We connected mathematics with ordinary situations rather than treating it as a collection of symbols on a page.
For a period, I also encouraged him to use a calculator for basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The purpose was not to avoid learning mathematics. It was to prevent basic calculations from becoming such a burden that they interfered with understanding the concepts being taught.
His father also helped by asking simple questions involving money.
For example:
"If you pay $10 in a shop for two pens costing $3 each, how much change should you receive?"
Questions like this helped connect mathematics with something the child could recognise in daily life.
Gradually, the picture changed.
Within about a year, his mathematics performance had improved considerably. By Year 8, he was achieving B grades—far above what his parents had initially expected.
The important lesson was not that a particular child suddenly became "good at mathematics."
The lesson was that the original difficulty had not told the whole story.
Sometimes a learner does not need more pressure.
The learner needs us to discover what is standing in the way of learning.
2. Look at Progress, Not Only the Starting Point
When children struggle academically, parents naturally compare their performance with what is expected for their year level.
Grades are useful. They tell us something about current performance.
But a grade by itself does not tell us how far a child has travelled.
A student who moves from an E to a D may have made an important step forward even though the grade is still below the expected level.
Another student may receive an A with very little difficulty and therefore have experienced a very different learning journey.
This is why progress matters.
In the case of a struggling learner, improvement may first appear in small ways:
- understanding a concept that was previously confusing;
- completing a problem with less assistance;
- recognising an error independently;
- remembering something that was previously forgotten;
- being willing to attempt a question that once seemed impossible.
These changes may appear small when viewed separately.
Together, they can indicate that learning is taking place.
Parents can therefore ask questions such as:
"What can my child do now that was difficult before?"
"Does my child need less help than before?"
"Is my child beginning to understand something that was previously confusing?"
These questions can reveal progress that a single report card may not show.
This does not mean that grades are unimportant. Academic achievement matters, and children should be supported in improving their results.
But grades are best understood as information about where the learner is now, rather than as a permanent description of what the learner can become.
A child who is struggling today may not remain at the same level tomorrow.
The more useful question is often not:
"Why isn't my child like the other students?"
but:
"What is the next step that will help my child move forward?"
3. Small Steps Can Change the Direction of Learning
When a child has struggled for a long time, giving the child the same level of difficulty again and again may not always produce improvement.
The learner may need a series of achievable steps that gradually rebuild confidence and understanding.
This does not mean making the work permanently easy.
It means starting from a point where the learner can experience genuine understanding and then increasing the challenge.
For a child who is struggling with mathematics, this might mean returning briefly to basic number concepts before moving back into the current school topic.
A student who has repeatedly experienced confusion may initially be more willing to attempt a problem when the first step feels manageable.
Once that first step becomes secure, the next one can be introduced.
Then another.
Gradually, the learner begins to experience something important:
"I can do this."
That experience should not be created through empty praise. It should come from genuine progress.
A teacher might say:
"Last week you needed help with this. Today you worked it out yourself."
The statement is specific. It tells the learner exactly what has changed.
Small improvements can therefore have a larger effect than their size suggests.
A learner who successfully completes one step is more willing to attempt the next. A learner who begins to understand one idea can use it to approach another. A learner who experiences genuine progress can begin to replace the expectation of failure with the possibility of success.
Over time, these small changes can produce substantial improvement.
The goal is not to keep the learner at an easier level.
The goal is to use manageable steps to help the learner reach a higher level of understanding and performance.
4. Give Difficult Ideas a Familiar Place to Begin
Sometimes a child does not need more explanation of the subject.
The child needs a reason for the subject to make sense.
An unfamiliar mathematical idea can feel abstract when it is presented only through symbols, rules, and textbook questions. A familiar situation can provide a bridge.
This does not mean that every lesson has to be turned into a game or that mathematics should be hidden behind entertainment.
The mathematics remains the same.
What changes is the context in which the learner first encounters it.
A struggling student once told me that finger foods were his favourite kind of food. From then on, different types of finger foods began appearing naturally in my mathematics examples.
Fractions could be discussed using pieces of food. Counting could involve quantities. Comparisons could involve different portions. Simple calculations could be connected with familiar choices and quantities.
The purpose was not to make the mathematics less serious.
It was to give the mathematics somewhere familiar to begin.
When a learner already understands the context, some of the mental effort that would otherwise be spent trying to understand the situation can be used for thinking about the mathematics itself.
This can be particularly helpful for students who have already developed the feeling that a subject is difficult.
A familiar example can quietly communicate:
"You already understand something about this world. Now let's use what you know to understand the mathematics."
Over time, the learner may become comfortable enough with the mathematical idea that the familiar context is no longer necessary.
That is the real goal.
The example is a bridge, not a destination.
5. From Familiar Examples to Independent Thinking
A familiar context can help a learner enter an unfamiliar idea.
But the learner should eventually be able to use the idea without depending on that context.
This is why good teaching gradually moves from the familiar to the unfamiliar.
A teacher may first explain a mathematical idea using something the learner already knows. Once the learner understands the underlying concept, the same idea can be presented with a different example.
Then another.
Eventually, the learner encounters a problem in the ordinary form used in school assessments, without the familiar situation that first made the idea understandable.
This gradual change is important.
If a student can solve a fractions problem only when it involves their favourite food, the student may have learned the example rather than the mathematical idea.
But if the student can later solve a fractions problem involving money, distance, measurement, or an entirely unfamiliar situation, the familiar example has done its job.
It has helped the learner build a transferable understanding.
The same principle applies across subjects.
A familiar everyday observation may help a student understand a scientific concept. A story may help make a historical idea meaningful. A familiar pattern may help a learner recognise a mathematical relationship.
But eventually the learner should be able to carry the underlying idea beyond the original example.
The familiar context is therefore a starting point.
It is a bridge to understanding, not a substitute for understanding.
As the learner becomes more confident, the bridge can gradually become less necessary.
The learner is then ready to cross into unfamiliar problems independently.
7. Find the Obstacle Before Increasing the Pressure
When a child is struggling, the natural response is often to give more work.
More questions. More practice. More revision. More reminders to concentrate.
Sometimes that is exactly what is needed.
But sometimes more work simply gives the learner more opportunities to experience the same difficulty.
Before increasing the pressure, it can be worth asking:
"What is preventing this child from learning?"
Perhaps an earlier concept is missing.
Perhaps the child does not understand the language being used.
Perhaps the current idea feels completely disconnected from anything familiar.
Perhaps basic skills are consuming so much attention that there is very little left for the new concept.
Perhaps the child has already experienced so much difficulty that they have begun to expect failure.
Each of these situations may require a different response.
This is why individual attention can be so valuable.
A teacher who listens carefully to a learner's answers, watches how the learner approaches a problem, and notices where the learner begins to hesitate can sometimes discover an obstacle that is invisible in a test score.
Once the obstacle is identified, the response can become more precise.
Instead of simply saying:
"Work harder."
the teacher can say:
"This is the part that is causing the difficulty. Let's work on that."
The aim is not to remove every difficulty from learning.
The aim is to remove unnecessary obstacles so that the learner can engage with the difficulty that actually belongs to the subject being learned.
That distinction matters.
A student should be challenged by mathematics, science, reading, or another subject—not unnecessarily held back by a missing foundation that nobody has yet noticed.
Conclusion
When a child struggles with a subject, it is natural for parents to worry about the future.
But a difficult stage in learning does not automatically predict a difficult future.
A low grade tells us where the learner is at a particular moment. It does not necessarily tell us why the learner is there or where the learner can go next.
Sometimes the learner needs more practice.
Sometimes an explanation needs to change.
Sometimes a missing foundation needs to be rebuilt.
Sometimes a familiar context can make an unfamiliar idea meaningful.
Sometimes the learner needs smaller steps and genuine opportunities to experience progress.
And sometimes the most important thing a teacher or parent can do is stop asking, "Why can't you do this?" and start asking:
"What is making this difficult for you?"
That question changes the direction of the conversation.
It turns a judgement into an investigation.
It looks for an obstacle instead of assigning an identity.
And once the obstacle is understood, something can be done about it.
The aim is not to promise that every child will suddenly become excellent at every subject.
The aim is more realistic—and more valuable:
Find what is getting in the way. Help the learner overcome it. Then give the learner another opportunity to move forward.
A child who is struggling today may simply be a learner who has not yet been given the right starting point, explanation, connection, or support.
Sometimes the difference between "I can't do this" and "I can do this now" begins with someone taking the time to discover what was missing.
